 Our Activities

Chapra Ashrama activities aim for the spiritual and cultural well being of all people. In recognition that spiritual and cultural well being of everyone, and Bihar in particular, is impossible unless some amount of physical health, education and material security are achieved, the Ashrama has taken up the challenge from its foundation day to provide health, & hygiene, medical service, and primary & vocational education to poor people of the town and some surrounding villages. Swami Vivekananda was the Great Leader and Inspiration. He said, “No amount of politics, lecturing and preaching of religion will be of any avail until the masses of India are once more well fed, well educated, and well cared for."

Non-formal education— at the primary school level is provided at ‘Adbhutananda Shikshayan’. About 600 children aged 5 to 14 enrolled in daily primary school classes are taught basic subjects. Advanced students get coaching and counceling. The majority of students attend registered government funded public schools before coming in the afternoon to the Ashrama for classes. They get effective tutoring in the primary subjects for 2 or 3 hours. They get warm milk and some nourishing food item daily before leaving the Ashrama for home. At present, besides at the Ashrama proper, Chapra Ashrama also supports / runs similar primary schools (Latu Maharaj Pathshalas) in three villages near Chapra town. However it has not been possible up to the present to provide daily food and milk to the village students, only periodic medical check-ups.

Personality Development & Integration

A monastic brother counsels, advises, and guides the youth who want to make something good out of their lives. The main substance is to learn to have higher values in life as well as to develop skills to master the problems which come with daily living. Having a (non-sectarian) spiritual ideal of life is also essential. The Life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda is one of the great inspirations for the youth in a ‘Study Circle’ which meets once weekly.

Relief Work— Relief materials, usually blankets, used garments, plastic sheets, and foods are rushed by the Ashrama to the poor and needy in outlying areas in times of flood, fire, severe cold, or other calamity. The Ashrama receives necessary and substantial material help from the Ramakrishna Headquarters in every instance.

Spiritual & Cultural Programmes— Spiritual & cultural activities are the bedrock and inspiration of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Chapra. Daily Puja (ritual worship) is held for Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, Sri Saradadevi, Swami Vivekananda and Swami Adbhutananda. Holy Prasad is distributed. Besides these the Ashrama conducts special worship on Ekadasi Days in honour of Bhagavan Sri Rama; Bhagavan Sri Krishna on Sri Krishna Janmasthami; Sri Sri Durga (on Mahasthami day), Bhavatarini Ma Kali at Kali Puja, and Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas Eve (By singular coincidence, the Ramakrishna Order of Sannyasins was founded on 24th December 1887). Spiritual Retreats for devotees are conducted periodically during the year. The grandest celebrations at the Ashrama are the birthdays (Janma-tithis) of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother and Swamiji, and also Swami Adbhutananda, when  processions is taken out through part of the town. ‘National Youth Day’ in celebrated on 12th January, date of Swami Vivekananda’s birthday in 1863. For National Youth Day a large number of school and college youth take part. Often these celebrations are carried to villages of the district also when rural people have great enjoyment. Guest Swamis of the Ramakrishna Mission often come to conduct the celebrations. Special mention is given for Village Mobile Medical Service and Non-formal education Centres below.

Annual Competitions for school and college students have been a tradition in the Ashrama up to 2008. Usually these popular competitions include Drawing and Painting, Speech-giving & Recitation (in English, Hindi, Sanskrit), Debate and choral Music.
